When the Wind Speaks, Christian and Native American Wisdom Abounds.

(Ancient Prayer Pipe)

Around the council fire, the wind rose-up. Chiefs, Elders, and Tribal Members became silent. They longed to hear the ancient wisdom of their ancestors. The People knew the wind speaks lessons about life. This is true even today.

Pentecost Season, Week 11

Welcome, Seekers.

Today's Wednesday Church on the Internet explores a little understood faith dynamic of how two spiritualties, Christianity and Native American, go together to enrich both. That's right! The two blend together in many ways to the benefit of each faith.

In my case, my Christian faith is stronger because of my Native American cultural roots.  I worship, write, and witness as both a Christian pastor and a tribal member of the Montaukett Indian Nation. I blend of both to the enrichment of Christianity with a Native American perspective. I celebrate both to enjoy a wealth of love for one God! Let's celebrate together.

Thank you for joining me for this different approach to Wednesday Worship. I can hear the wind rise-up. Let's worship and see what we can learn.

OPENING THOUGHTS ...

"There is one God looking down on us all. We are all children of one God. The sun, the darkness, the winds, are all listening to what we now say."

THE GATHERING

God, the Great Spirit, hear our plea. Come, join us.
God, the Great Spirit, hear our pledge. Always, we love you.
God, the Great Spirit, hear our promise. Today, we follow you.
God, the Great spirit, hear our vow. Forever, we praise you.
God, the Great Spirit, hear our plea. Come, join us.

WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND RECEIVE NEW LIVES

Creator,

Allow us to walk into the sacred circle of life. We are not worthy of  such honor. We rely upon your mercy to forgive our sins and make us right with your spirit. Thank you for the blessings of new life.

Amen-Aho!

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE          Matthew 22:34-40 (NIV)

The Greatest Commandment

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

MESSAGE     "The Parable of Two Buckets of Water"
(The Coming Together of the Old Ways and the New Ways)

In the old ways, people made everything they have from what Mother Nature provides. Life was good!

When the time comes to have a celebration in thanksgiving for such goodness, men talk to young boys and women talk to young girls to teach them how to live.

When the new ways began, the first Christians came. They have teachers. They teach us how to live good, too. The elders and teachers all teach about God and how to live good. There are no accidents because everybody follows the rules. The buckets are filled. The people all come. Everybody drinks and is filled.

Then, the elders fall silent. The teachers are silent. Hard times come. Difficulties come. People forget how to live good. Accidents happens because people no longer follow the rules. The buckets are empty. All the water goes out. The people are thirsty.

Now, the elders are speaking again. The teachers are teaching again. The people are singing again. Now, the people know how to live good. The buckets are filling. The people all come. Everybody drinks and is filled. We are happy once again.

We must follow the new ways God and Mother Nature provide for us.

CLOSING PRAYER

Thank You, O God and Great Spirit, for all you have given us. We have all that we need to thrive. We have enough to share.
We have enough to proclaim your holiness. this we do with great joy. Amen.

SACRED MISCILLANY ...

1. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, about 5% of Americans surveyed listed Native American or Alaskan Native as their race.

2. There are hundreds of tribes still existing in the United States. Each can claim their culture and religion. Native American Christian Churches are strong in many areas.

3. Native Americans gather to celebrate their cultures in pow-wows. If you can, visit such a celebration. Please know that the Dance Circle, dances, and dancer's regalia are sacred holding much symbolism. An announcer will explain all rules and courtesies expected. Please ask questions. Native Americans welcome you at their pow-wows. You can celebrate your cultural heritage while they celebrate their heritage at this gathering.

4. Here are some books helpful for further learning about Native American culture.

- Terri Jean's 365 Days of Walking the Red Road: the Native American path to leading a spiritual life every day (Avon, Mass.: Adams Media Corporation, 2003).

5. Here is a Native American Prayer-Poem in the Mohawk prayer tradition by Sue Ellen Horne (Mohawk)

"All Things Hold Beauty"

Thank you, Lord, for all that you have given us.

Thank you for the beauty of the universe that you created; the trees, the sky, the mountains, the rain.

All things hold beauty in themselves and all are related and touch each creature of the earth. You created the rhythm and
pattern of the universe in a harmony of movement, sight, and sound.

Help us to appreciate your creation and to live with our eyes, ears, and hearts open to your message. Amen.

Hello, Mid-Summer Saints,

Some of my favorite pictures are like this one of a happy Jesus.

(Google Images)

I cannot resist loving a Savior who himself loved little children, imperfect Apostles, and sinners. I am not alone with this attitude.

Too many Christians worship a Savior who sternly proclaims
rules and disciplines. What type of Jesus suits you best?

This Wednesday Church on the Internet lifts high the side of Jesus' ministry that encourages each of us to worship a positive, joyful, and fun Christianity. So, let's put on our happy faces and praise God together!

Thank you for being present for this week's faith fest.

WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND RECEIVE NEW LIFE

Gracious God,

You have invited us into your faith family. It is our joy to love Jesus. It is our privilege to obey the Holy Spirit. As hard as we try, we fall short of being fully Christian. We sin. Have mercy upon us. In the name of Jesus, please forgive our sins and restore our souls to a state of purity. This gives us new life with a fresh start. Thank you for your grace!

Amen.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE                    Psalm 150

                         Praise the Lord.
                         Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
                                    2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
                         praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
                         Praise the Lord.

MESSAGE     "How can anyone enjoy church services?"

Have you ever heard someone say, "I didn't get anything out of that church service!" How sad. Whose fault is it for that  attitude, anyway? Go ahead, blame God for your lack of enjoyable church experiences.

Many curmudgeon Christians do not know how to enjoy their worship. Here are a few suggestions that I have gleaned over a lifetime of being Christian and four decades of being a pastor. If one or more make sense for a better worship experience, try it.

1. Before you go to church, pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you to a meaningful and enjoyable worship service.

2. Enter the worship area with a positive attitude.

3. Make friends in the congregation. Greet them with great gusto away from the sanctuary and out of hearing by praying congregants.

4. Smile. It becomes contagious.

5. Don't expect worship perfection. Accept the service for what it is, a time of praising God by imperfect people doing the best they can do.

6. Stop the day dreaming. Listen carefully to the service!

7. Don't vegetate in the sanctuary, participate! Get involved in worship, and it will transform you.

8. As the worship transform you, you will find yourself "getting something out of the service."

Amen? ... Amen!

Pastor Mike

CLOSING PRAYER

Creative God,

Create in me healthy attitudes about my faith. Keep me positive, wholesome, and happy in my faith journey. As you work on me, I will work in me to enjoy my church.

Amen.

SACRED MISCELLANY ...

It is my prayer that all Wednesday Church visitors leave our social media sanctuary feeling better now than when they arrived. Therefore, today's Sacred Miscellany are simple one or two sentence sermons served with a smile from me. Enjoy!

- Dairy Queen isn't the only place with awesome Sundays!

- iPod or iPad? Try iPray!

- Choosy moms choose Jesus!

- Staying for eternity? Smoking or non-smoking?

- For heaven's sake, what are you doing?

- Get rich quick. Count your blessing.

- Got Jesus?

- Honk if you love Jesus. Text while driving if you want to meet him!

- Hungry? Soul food served in church.

- Don't worry. You only have to pray on days that end in "y."

- If God is your co-Pilot, you better switch seats.

CLOSING THOUGHT ...

Your attitude about worship and preparation for the  service help you to "get something out of the service."

Pentecost Season, Week 9

Hello, Summer Saints!

Have you had plenty of rain? Hopefully, your home gardens flourish and the nearby farmers had corn "knee high by the 4th of July." Here in Florida, the crops are lush and harvests ample. We are blessed!

Too many people take such blessings for granted. We assume that there will always be enough safe tap water when we need it. The current trend to pay expensive prices for fancy bottled water gives a clue of how much we see Mother Nature's basics as guaranteed commodities and not God's blessings. Shame on us!

Today's Wednesday Church on the Internet thanks God for the gifts of rain and water. Perhaps this week's Church will start a trend for us to humble ourselves and express gratitude for the most basic essentials of life. We would have no life without God's blessings of soil, air, water, and the flora as well as fauna of Creation. Thank you God!

Thank you for being a part of this appreciation revolution.

Pastor Mike

OPENING THOUGHT ...

"And when it rains on your parade, look up rather than
down. Without the rain, there would be no rainbows."

- Gilbert K. Chesterton
(Accessed on www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/rain - July 15, 2013.)

WORSHIP ...

THE GATHERING

Creator God, You made the Earth in perfect balance.
Resurrected Jesus, You added our salvation to this balance.
Active Holy Spirit, You invite us to accept this  salvation.
Creator God, appearing as three-in-one, we worship You for your majesty!

WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND RECEIVE NEW LIFE

 Gracious God,

We will never know the scope of your forgiveness. We do know how hard we try to walk a Christian path each day. Still, we sin. Forgive us of our wayward thoughts, words, and deeds. Cleanse our souls, O God. Make us anew so that on this day we can do our best to live righteously. This is the desires of our hearts. We humbly submit our confession of sin and gratefully seek your forgiving mercy in Christ's name.

Amen.

 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE            James 5:17-18 (NIV)

Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly
that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land
for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the
heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

MESSAGE

Do you like rain? Most people like rain in just the right amounts. Have too much of the wet stuff and mud abounds. Too little of the same and the earth dries up harder than an old buttermilk biscuit. We have little control over the weather.

Is there anything we can do about the weather? Yes! Let God know through prayer that we appreciate all of the weather we experience. Tell the Creator about your weather needs. Put your trust in God's providence. Rain will come when the Earth's flora and fauna need it. So, thank God for rain!

CLOSING PRAYER

Benevolent God,

We live good lives because You take care of us. Our needs are met. Thank You for every way You bless us. As You have blessed us, let us strive to be blessings to others.

Amen.

BENEDICTION

Let us go  forward in our Christians lives
always trusting in God to provide the
means for faithful living.

SACRED MISCELLANY ...

1. Here is a spin-off of an old folk story that I learned a long time ago.

"NATURE TEACHES A LESSON"

I went to town and it was raining. I went by the backyard path. I slipped and fell in the mud. It wasn't my fault.

The next day, I went to town again and it was raining. I went by the backyard path. Again, I slipped and fell in the mud. This time it was my fault.

The next day, I went to town again and it was raining. I went by the backyard path. I walked around the mud. Still, my shoes got wet. I am learning.

The next day, I went to town again and it was raining. I went by the front yard path. It had drainage and therefore no mud or wet grass. I stayed dry. I learned a lesson. Did you?

Point: Consider your path before you go. (This is good advice for life-plans, too.)

2. Here is a Native American prayer-poem expressing much gratitude for life's essential blessings.

O our mother the earth, O our father the sky,
Your children are we, and with tired backs
We bring you gifts that you love.
Then weave for us a garment of brightness,
May the warp be the bright light of morning,
May the weft be the red light of evening,
May the fringes be the falling rain,
May the borders be the standing rainbow.
Thus weave for us a garment of brightness
That we may walk fittingly where grass is green,
O our mother the earth, O our father the sky.

        - Tewa Pueblo Prayer

3. Here are some rainfall facts about the Holy Land.

- Jerusalem has about 22 inches of annual rainfall, which happens from May through October
(Fact from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem accessed on July 16, 2013.)

- The Dead Sea area has an average of 3 inches of annual rainfall, which is 2 inches at the south end and 4 inches at the north end.
(Facts from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sea accessed on July 16, 2013.)

- Lake Tiberias (Sea of Gallilee) area has about 11.8 inches of annual rainfall.
(Fact from enj.wikipedia.org/wiki/geography_of_Israel accessed on July 16, 2013.)

4. Joke time!

Q. When does it rain money?
A. When there is "change" in the weather.

Q. What do you call two straight days of rain in Tampa, FL?
A. The weekend.

Q. What do you call it when it rains turkeys and chickens?
A. Foul (fowl) weather.

Q. What does daylight-savings time mean in Seattle?
A. An extra hour of rain.

Q. What did one raindrop say to the other?
A. Two's company, three's a cloud.

PASTOR MIKE'S FINAL THOUGHTS ...

"Humankind takes God's gifts of basic life elements, such as air, soil, flora, fauna, water, etc., for granted. We abuse them and ignore the generosity of the Giver. Let's change our ways. We can begin by thanking God for the summer rains that provide beautiful flowers, delicious foods, and amazing rainbows. Do it now, and keep it up for the rest of our lives! Then, we can move on to more active eco-justice projects. Amen.

Pentecost Season, Week 8

Welcome, everyone on a Christian journey!

We are all travelers. If you are a religious person, your living becomes a journey in obedience to the Almighty. Some of us stay at home. Some of us frequently travel. Some of us do a little bit of both. What is your faith preference?

However we chose to live out our faith journey, we mature in our understanding of God's presence, work, and grace in the present. The more we see and learn, the more we thank God for travel mercies!

Today's Wednesday Church on the Internet praises God for divine love every day no matter where we are along life's path. Whether your are on the road or still at home thinking about your faith journey, thank you for being a part of today's praise congregation!

THE GATHERING      Psalm 100:1-3 (Tyndale, The Book)

"Shout with joy to the earth, O earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture."

WE CONFESS OUR SINS AND RECEIVE NEW LIFE

          Almighty God,

You have raised Jesus from death to life,
and crowned him Lord of all.
We confess that we have not bowed before him,
or acknowledged his rule in our lives.
We have gone along with the ways of the world,
and failed to give him glory.
Forgive us and raise us from sin,
that we may be your faithful people,
obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ,
             who rules the world,
and is head of the church, his body.
In his name we pray, Amen.

MESSAGE              "God Goes With You!"

This fact is no secret. Life is dynamic! Life energy causes changes in all living creatures from the smallest cell to the biggest organism.

Human life never stands still. You can be as stiff as a statue or running as fast as an Olympic sprinter and be changing.

Spiritually, religious people - especially Christians - are always on a journey. They are  moving to fulfill the divine purpose for their birth.

You and I are on this journey. As Christians, we have a divine mandate to accomplish God's reason(s) for our being here. Our journey has more to do with obedience, compassion, forgiveness, kindness, prayer, worship, and faith than money, power, materialism, success, fame, egotism, and greed. We are doing God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit's business!

On this journey, we are not alone. God's Holy Spirit goes with us blessing us with travel mercies. These travel mercies are sometimes small gestures of care, grace, beauty, a good meal, a safe trip, and minor gifts beyond number. At other times, God's travel mercies reach great importance as healings, miracles, epiphanies, survival, marriage, births of children, friendships, and life changing divine interventions that change our lives. Most of God's travel mercies lie between the small and the big. Can you think of some travel mercies - small or big - that God has provided on your life's journey?

How can we respond to God's kindnesses bound-up in the divine travel mercies enjoyed? It's simple. Stop what you are doing right now and praise God for travel mercies received!

Pastor Mike

CLOSING PRAYER

Loving Creator God,

Life is our amazing journey and wonderful adventure! We praise You for travel mercies of grace along our way. You are right with us in many forms. With love, we say, "Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!"

Amen.

 BENEDICTION

Let us rejoice and be glad for God travels with
us guiding our paths and sharing Heavenly mercy.

SACRED MISCELLANY ...

1. Use Pastor Mike's travel prayer.

O God,

When I travel, may your presence follow me, your eyes watch over me, your angels protect me, and your grace keep me in a good mood.

Amen.

2. Use these key Christian tips on your trip.

- Pray often for good health, travel safety, and a merry heart.
- Pack a Bible and devotional booklet for daily use.
- Be friendly to all you meet.
- Be kind and generous to the people who serve you.
- Let patience be your guide.
- Be positive all of the time.
- Have fun!

3. Remember, a merry heart brightens the day. Please enjoy these simple jokes.

- As the plane stopped at the gate, the Captain made this announcement, "As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses."

- This was heard on a Southwest Airline flight. "Ladies and Gentlemen, if you wish to smoke, the smoking section on this plane is on the wing.  If you can light 'em, you can smoke 'em."

- An old, senior Senator called and had a question about the documents he needed for his trip to China.

After a lengthy discussion about passports, he was told that he needed a visa. "Oh, no I don't. I've been to China many times and never needed on before.

Again, he was told that his stay required a visa. He looked angry and replied, "Look, I've been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express."

PASTOR MIKE'S FINAL THOUGHT ...

"Our lives are Christian journeys to bring honor to God. Let's praise the Almighty for ample travel mercies given along the way!"

That's all for this week's Wednesday Church. Come back next week - Wednesday, July 24th - when new church material will be posted.
